Me'phaa Bible Translation Project

Traditionally the Me'phaa (met PAH) people have believed many animistic myths that have been passed down through the generations, but with the recent influence of Christianity, they have shown interest in knowing more about the God of Scripture. Scattered across the mountains of Guerrero, Mexico, these people speak several related but distinct varieties of Me'phaa, and this vital translation project will provide the 135,000 people in this language community access to the life-transforming power of God's Word.

The Me'phaa language communities are asking for the New Testament, along with Genesis and other Old Testament portions, in both written and audio forms in all of their language varieties. And both believers and secular bilingual school teachers want to use and preserve this group of languages. This desire opens doors for the translation team to provide much needed literacy materials. It also ensures that once the translated Word becomes available, people will be receptive and prepared to read it.

Wycliffe's Solution: Iglesias Christianas Tlapanecas (ICT) is a local Me'phaa organization that reaches out to the Me'phaa people by sending indigenous pastors and missionaries to their villages. This ministry is providing dedicated people to work with a Wycliffe team to translate the Bible for their own people in four of these languages. The primary translation for the Malinaltepec language is being drafted and is scheduled to be completed in the next several years. Translators are using the Malinaltepec translation as a base for the other three language projects: Acatepec, Teocuitlapa, and Tlacoapa. This process is commonly referred to as a "cluster strategy." Eventually they will all be printed and recorded so that this whole family of Me'phaa language communities will receive translations of God's Word in their own languages.

Consider watching this video of the Kimyal people when they received the Word of God for the first time in their native language. The beauty of their joy in receiving God's Word is beyond compare, let's join with Wycliffe and help bring that joy to others who do not have God's Word in their language yet.
